How much does a trip to Greece cost in 2026? A real per-person budget for Athens and the islands
What 10 nights in Athens, Naxos and Santorini really cost per person in 2026: hotels, ferries, food, the climate fee, the new airport taxi fare, and how a group splits per-room bills.

The same 10 nights in Greece can cost under 1,000 euros a person or over 5,000. Food and buses are good value almost everywhere, so the total depends mostly on which islands you pick, which month you go and how you travel between them.
This post gives a per-person budget for a classic 10-night Athens and Cyclades trip in three tiers, the 2026 fees and fare changes most guides have not caught up with, and how a group splits the bills that are charged per room instead of per person.
How much does a trip to Greece cost? The short answer
For 10 nights in Athens, Naxos and Santorini, budget roughly 965 euros per person (~$1,090) on rented rooms, gyros and slow ferries, about 2,015 euros (~$2,270) for a comfortable mid-range trip with three-star hotels, fast ferries and a boat day, and around 5,060 euros (~$5,700) at the premium end with a caldera view. International flights are on top, and from the US they averaged about $1,020 round trip to Athens over the past year, from around $635 in February to around $1,310 in June.
That works out to about $109, $227 and $570 per person per day, all in except the flight to get there. Prices below use the European Central Bank rate of about $1.13 to the euro in early October 2026, and assume the shoulder seasons, May and late September to October. In July and August, add 30 percent or more to the island accommodation line; Kayak's average Santorini hotel night roughly quadruples from January to June.
The example is a group of four, 10 nights, three in Athens, three on Naxos and four on Santorini, ferrying out from Piraeus and coming back to Athens by ferry on the budget tier or by plane on the other two, sharing rooms two to a room:
| Per person, 10 nights | Budget | Balanced | Premium |
|---|---|---|---|
| Accommodation | 380 EUR (~$430) | 750 EUR (~$845) | 2,000 EUR (~$2,250) |
| Climate resilience fee | 10 EUR (~$11) | 25 EUR (~$30) | 60 EUR (~$70) |
| Food and drink | 250 EUR (~$280) | 600 EUR (~$675) | 1,400 EUR (~$1,580) |
| Ferries, flight to Athens and airport transfers | 170 EUR (~$190) | 240 EUR (~$270) | 450 EUR (~$505) |
| Island buses, car and local transport | 30 EUR (~$35) | 70 EUR (~$80) | 300 EUR (~$340) |
| Sights, boats and tours | 85 EUR (~$95) | 250 EUR (~$280) | 700 EUR (~$790) |
| SIM, laundry, ATM fees, small stuff | 40 EUR (~$45) | 80 EUR (~$90) | 150 EUR (~$170) |
| Total per person, excluding international flights | about 965 EUR (~$1,090) | about 2,015 EUR (~$2,270) | about 5,060 EUR (~$5,700) |
The full cost breakdown
Accommodation
Rooms are the biggest line and the one that moves most with the calendar. Athens hotels averaged about 176 euros a night across January to July 2025, according to the Athens hotel association, and rates rose again in the first half of 2026. Greek hotel prices overall were up about 14 percent year on year in August 2026.
The budget tier uses hostels in Athens and the family-run rented rooms the islands are full of, about 30 to 45 euros per person a night two to a room. Balanced means three-star hotels: around 150 euros a room in central Athens, 110 on Naxos, and 180 on Santorini away from the caldera edge, in Fira's back streets or near Kamari. Premium is four-star in Athens and on Naxos plus a five-star caldera-view room in Oia or Imerovigli, where several hundred euros a night is normal even in shoulder season.
The caldera view is the single biggest choice in the budget. Four nights with the view instead of a 15-minute bus ride from it can add 1,000 euros or more to the room bill, even in shoulder season.
The climate resilience fee
Greece charges a climate crisis resilience fee on every night in paid accommodation, set by law and collected by the property. It is charged per room or per property, not per person, and it is higher from April to October:
| Per room or property, per night | April to October | November to March |
|---|---|---|
| Hotels, one and two star | 2 EUR | 0.50 EUR |
| Hotels, three star | 5 EUR | 1.50 EUR |
| Hotels, four star | 10 EUR | 3 EUR |
| Hotels, five star | 15 EUR | 4 EUR |
| Rented rooms | 2 EUR | 0.50 EUR |
| Short-term rentals | 8 EUR | 2 EUR |
| Houses over 80 square meters and villas | 15 EUR | 4 EUR |
Two to a room halves it per person, which is why it is only 10 to 60 euros a head on this trip. A group of four in one villa splits a 15 euro fee four ways. Many hotels add it to the bill at checkout rather than to the prepaid booking, so it often lands on whoever settles up at the desk.
Food and drink
Food is where Greece is still kind. A pita gyros is about 2.30 to 4.70 euros in Athens and closer to 5 on the islands, a cheap taverna meal is around 15 euros, and dinner for two at a mid-range taverna runs about 60. Restaurant and cafe prices rose about 5.5 percent in the year to August 2026, so older guides undershoot slightly.
The budget tier is 25 euros a day: bakery breakfasts, gyros, supermarket picnics and one sit-down meal. Balanced is 60 euros a day, with a taverna dinner and wine most nights. Premium is 140 a day, with seafood by the kilo and cocktails at sunset, which on Santorini is priced for the view.
Ferries, the flight back and airport transfers
The Cyclades run on ferries, and the gap between slow and fast boats is large. Lowest one-way fares on Ferryhopper this fall: Piraeus to Naxos 52.50 euros on a conventional ferry or about 70 to 78 on a high-speed one, Naxos to Santorini 31.50 slow or about 60 fast, and Santorini back to Piraeus 46.50 on Blue Star, about six to seven hours. Book early in summer; the cheapest deck fares sell out first.
The balanced tier flies Santorini to Athens instead, which saves most of a day. Kayak's average round trip on that route is about $128, so one way usually comes to roughly 55 to 70 euros if you book ahead, plus a checked bag on the cheapest fares.
Getting into Athens from the airport costs 9 euros on the metro or 5.50 on the express bus. The taxi flat fare to the center is rising from 40 euros by day and 55 at night to 50 and 65 (night is midnight to 5 a.m.), under a deal agreed in September 2026, so check the price card at the rank. Even at the new rate, a group of four by day pays 12.50 each, barely more than the metro, with the bags handled. This is one of the few places in the trip where a group saves by sharing.
Getting around on the islands
Athens is cheap to move around: a single ticket is 1.20 euros for 90 minutes, a 24-hour ticket 4.10, a five-day ticket 8.20, and a three-day tourist ticket at 20 euros includes one airport round trip. On Santorini and Naxos, the public buses cost about 1.80 to 3 euros a ride and run from the main towns to the beaches and ports.
Balanced adds a rental car for a day or two to see Naxos's mountain villages; Kayak's average on Santorini is about $32 a day, split two or four ways. An ATV is around 25 to 60 euros a day. US drivers should get an International Driving Permit before leaving home, about $20 from AAA: the US State Department says Greek law requires one alongside a US license, and rental desks often ask for it for cars and ATVs alike. Premium uses private transfers and a driver for a day.
Sights, boats and tours
The Acropolis is 30 euros, the same price all year, with timed entry. The Ancient Agora is 20, the Acropolis Museum 20, and Akrotiri on Santorini, the Bronze Age town under volcanic ash, 12. Those four alone are about 85 euros, the budget tier's whole line. State sites, the Acropolis included, are free on 28 October, a public holiday, and on the last weekend of September, which can take most of that line off a late-season trip if you can face the crowds.
Balanced adds a shared catamaran cruise around the caldera with a swim stop and dinner, usually 100 to 200 euros per person, plus a cooking class or a guided tour in Athens. Premium is a private boat charter split among the group, a private Acropolis guide, and a day trip to Delphi, whose site ticket is another 20 euros.
Everything else
An eSIM or local SIM, a load of laundry halfway through, a beach umbrella, ATM fees and the bottled water you will buy every day in summer. About 40 euros per person on a budget, 80 balanced and 150 at the top end.
What nobody budgets for on a Greece trip
- The airport taxi, at night. Land after midnight and you pay the night flat fare, 65 euros at the new rate rather than 50. Check your landing time before you count on the day rate.
- The fee at checkout. The climate resilience fee is usually paid at the hotel, on top of a booking you thought was prepaid. On a five-star Santorini room, four nights adds 60 euros.
- Ferry cancellations. Fast ferries cancel in strong meltemi winds, mostly in July and August. A missed connection can mean an extra night or a last-minute flight.
- Sunbeds. On popular beaches a pair of loungers and an umbrella is a daily charge, often tied to buying drinks. By law at least half of every beach must stay free of them, so bringing a towel is always an option.
- Checked bags on the island flight. Flight averages are base fares, and the cheapest Greek domestic tickets often leave out the checked bag, so a big suitcase can add a fee to every leg.
How the three tiers actually feel
| Budget | Balanced | Premium | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sleep | Hostels in Athens, family-run rooms on the islands | Three-star hotels, a short bus ride from the caldera | Four-star in Athens, a caldera-view room in Oia |
| Eat | Gyros, bakeries, supermarket picnics | Taverna dinners with wine most nights | Seafood by the kilo, sunset cocktails |
| Move | Slow ferries, the metro, island buses | Fast ferries, a flight back, a rental car day | Private transfers, a driver, a boat charter |
| Do | The four big ticketed sites | A catamaran day and a cooking class | Private guides, a Delphi day trip |
| Per person | about 965 EUR (~$1,090) | about 2,015 EUR (~$2,270) | about 5,060 EUR (~$5,700) |
Splitting a Greece trip, where half the bills are per room
Greek trips have an unusual money shape. The big charges are per room or per boat, not per person: the hotel, the climate fee, the villa, the airport taxi, the rental car, the private boat. And one person usually books the ferries for everybody, months ahead, on one card.
That makes the split uneven in quiet ways. If the group takes two rooms and one couple picks the caldera view, the room charge and its fee are not shared four ways. If two people skip the catamaran, the boat is split two ways, not four. And the person who booked all eight ferry tickets is carrying the whole group's transport until the end.
Four rules keep it fair. Log every prepayment on the day it is paid, in the currency it was paid in. Split room charges and room fees among the people in that room, not the whole group. Split shared rides, taxis, cars and boats among the people who rode. And keep cash withdrawals out of the split entirely; the withdrawal is not an expense, the things it buys are.
Then settle once, at the end, in one pass. If you want the mechanics of that, who owes who after a group trip walks through the math, and the general playbook is in how to split trip expenses with friends.
How groups keep it straight in euros and dollars
Type "taverna dinner 96 split with Anna, Ben and Kim" into the group chat before you leave the table and it is logged and split. Or post a photo of the receipt straight into the chat, the same way you would send a picture to friends, and HippoSplit reads it and files the expense with its items, total and currency.
Per-room charges are where a caption helps. Post the hotel receipt with "Santorini room, Anna and Ben only" and the split follows the caption. For a group that always splits the same way, set it once in the group's AI instructions, for example "Rooms split by the people in them, everything else four ways", and every expense the AI logs follows it. If a taverna adds a tip line, HippoSplit treats it as a fee rather than food and spreads it in proportion to what each person ordered.
The dollar flight booking and the euro ferry tickets live in the same group. HippoSplit handles 150 plus currencies at live rates and converts as it goes, so nobody has to agree on a rate at the end. The friend who refuses to install anything can open the group from a link and follow the running total as a guest without signing up; they see everything, and adding expenses needs a free account. If you are budgeting before you book, the free travel budget template turns a plan like this into a budget per person and per day before anyone books.
Greece trip cost FAQ
How much does a two-week trip to Greece cost?
Scale the 10-night figures up by about 40 percent: roughly 1,350 euros (~$1,520) budget, 2,820 euros (~$3,180) balanced and 7,080 euros (~$7,980) premium per person, before international flights. A longer trip gets cheaper per day if you add a slower island like Naxos or Paros rather than more nights on Santorini.
How much does a trip to Greece cost for two people?
At the balanced tier, about 4,030 euros (~$4,540) for two over 10 nights, plus roughly $2,030 for two round-trip flights from the US at last year's average fare. That makes about $6,600 for a comfortable couple's trip to Athens and two islands.
Is Greece expensive in 2026?
Food, buses and slow ferries are still good value by Western European standards. What has risen is accommodation, up about 14 percent in a year, and the islands most people want, Santorini and Mykonos, are priced well above the rest. A mid-range trip is about $227 a day per person before international flights, and the hotel is the largest share.
Is Santorini or Mykonos more expensive?
Mykonos, usually. Kayak's average hotel night peaks at around $975 in July on Mykonos against around $675 in June on Santorini. Both are far above Naxos, Paros or Milos, where the same budget buys a bigger room or more nights.
Do I need ETIAS to visit Greece?
Not yet. ETIAS, the EU's travel authorization for visa-free visitors including US, UK, Canadian and Australian passport holders, has not launched and still had no start date in October 2026. The EU has said it will give several months' notice before it does, and it will cost 20 euros when it starts. The Entry/Exit System has been fully running since April 2026, which means fingerprints and a photo at the border, but there is nothing to apply for or pay. Rules change, so check the official EU site before you fly.
When is the cheapest time to visit Greece?
For flights, February, when US to Athens fares averaged around $635. For a trip that still has warm sea and open islands, late September to mid-October and May are the best value: hotel rates fall well below their summer peak and most ferries still run, though the climate fee stays at its April-to-October rate. From November many island hotels and tavernas close.
Do you tip in Greece?
A little. Leaving around 5 to 10 percent at a sit-down taverna, or rounding up, is normal and appreciated. Nobody expects the 15 to 20 percent common in the US, and at a gyros counter or a cafe, leaving the coins is enough.
Can I pay by card everywhere in Greece?
Mostly. Greek law requires most businesses, including taxis and kiosks, to accept cards, and contactless is common. Carry 20 to 40 euros per person per day in cash for small family-run tavernas, beach bars and the climate fee at smaller places, and withdraw from a bank ATM rather than an independent machine to keep fees down.
The bottom line
Greece is cheap per meal and expensive per view, and the space between those two facts is your budget. The food is not where the money goes. The caldera room, the summer weeks, the fast ferries and the per-room fees are.
Pick one splurge island and one slower one, travel in May or early fall, book the ferries early, and log the room charges by room. For another European trip broken down the same way, see what a trip to Italy costs, and for a cheaper beach-and-islands trip in a different currency, what a trip to Thailand costs.
